Ctenanthe burle-marxii var. obscura is a flowering plant in the Marantaceae family and native to tropical regions of South America. It is known for its attractive foliage and is popular as an indoor plant or as a garden ornamental in warmer climates. Ctenanthe burle-marxii var. obscura is a small, compact herbaceous perennial, growing in a cluster and forming a dense, bushy appearance. It grows close to the ground and is a great ground cover for a shady spot. It is valued for its stunning foliage. The leaves are large, elongated, and oval-shaped, growing up to 12 inches in length. They have a glossy texture and are a rich, dark green color with a unique leaf patterning. The upper surface of the leaves features bold, green-colored stripes that run parallel to the veins. The undersides of the leaves are a contrasting deep purple color. This striking contrast between the green and purple creates a visually appealing display. Ctenanthe burle-marxii var. obscura exhibits nyctinasty, meaning its leaves fold up in the evening and unfold during the day. This natural behavior adds an element of movement to the plant and can be quite captivating to observe. It prefers bright, indirect light, thrives in warm and humid conditions, and needs consistent moisture, ensuring it remains evenly moist but not waterlogged. Can I Visit the Nursery?
While our nursery facilities are not open to the public, we do make a large selection of plants available for purchase online, in person at the Shop at Fairchild and multiple times throughout the year during plant sales. Check our plants sales calendar here.
Do You Deliver or Can I Pick Up My Order?
Both! We deliver locally within 15 miles of Fairchild, and you can also pick up your plants in person at the Garden.
When Will I Receive My Order?
Local Deliveries: Please note that we currently only deliver on the weekend. You will automatically receive updates as we process your order.
Pick Up: Orders may be picked up to 5 days from the Shop at Fairchild. You will automatically receive updates as we process your order.
Handling: Orders are typically readied for delivery or pick-up the week after receipt of your order.
Do You Ship?
Unfortunately, we don’t currently ship—but check back often because we are working to make shipping available nationwide. (Restrictions may apply.)
Will My Plant Look Exactly Like the Photos?
Our photos show various specimens for reference. Product listings also include an image showing the approximate size of the plant you will receive. Each plant is unique, and variations in color, size, and form are natural.
I’m a Fairchild Member! Am I Eligible for a Member Discount?
Yes! Fairchild Members receive 10% off each purchase. Members must enter the promo code at checkout.
Are There Limitations for the Use of Discount/Promo Codes?
Yes. When using a discount or promo code, you may only use one code per transaction. Codes may not be combined with other discounts, promotions or offers.

What is Your Return or Replacement Policy?
Due to the delicate nature of live plants, we are unable to accept returns.
While we are confident you’ll love your plant(s), if you are dissatisfied with your purchase, please email plants@fairchildgarden.org with clear photos within 48 hours of delivery or pick-up so that we may immediately assist you and evaluate your concern.
